How to set the Java environment variable
Java is a technology that is required for Eclipse to work. It is frequently updated via the internet, often without the user realizing it. Eclipse will often work with the latest update, but just as often will not. Any PC may have multiple versions of Java installed. For Eclipse to work with Access Anaesthetics it is often necessary to specify which Java version to use.
To do this ...
1. | Go to Eclipse Menu > Setup > Maintenance > Set Java environment variable. |
2. | Select the version of Java to use and click <Set environment variable>. |
This will create the following environment variable (1.5.0_22 will be replaced by the version you have used)
Variable name: java_jre_dll
Variable value: C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_22\bin\client\jvm.dll
Sometimes this menu function does not create the variable at all, even though the process appears to complete successfully. If this is the case, the environment variable needs to be set manually.
To do this, go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment variables.
Click the <New> button near the bottom of the window and enter the variable details shown above, remembering to adjust the version of Java if you have installed a different version.
You should check the existence of the file by navigating to it in Windows Explorer.
The screen should look like that shown at right.
On 64 bit PCs, Java may be installed in the C:\Program Files (x86) folder, and the environment variable needs to be adjusted to this folder. |
